Why Neck and Shoulder Tension Keeps Coming Back



Nervous System Healing with Craniosacral Therapy


Neck and shoulder tension is one of the most common things I see in my practice. Many of the clients I work with here in Ahwatukee Foothills and the greater Phoenix area come in experiencing migraines, jaw pain, neck aches, poor sleep, fatigue, brain fog, and a constant feeling of stress or overwhelm.


Often people say they simply “don’t feel like themselves” or feel disconnected from their bodies.


What many people don’t realize is that chronic tension is rarely just a muscular issue. The body is always responding to both our external environment and our internal emotional world. When stress builds up without a full release, the body can begin to hold that stress physically.


Over time, this can create a repeating cycle where tension continues to return.


What Causes Chronic Neck and Shoulder Tension?


When clients arrive with chronic neck and shoulder tension, they are often experiencing a combination of symptoms such as headaches, jaw tension, tight shoulders, fatigue, poor sleep, and brain fog.


While muscle tension is part of the picture, the deeper pattern often lives within the nervous system.


Our bodies are always responding to our environments. That includes both our external environment (work stress, physical posture, daily responsibilities) and our internal environment (emotions, thoughts, stress, anxiety, or fear).


If we continue to move through stressful environments without resolving what is happening underneath the surface, the body can begin to hold those patterns physically. The tension becomes part of a repeating cycle.


Until the body feels safe enough to release that cycle, the tension often keeps returning.


How the Nervous System Stores Stress in the Body


The nervous system is an incredibly intelligent network that is constantly scanning and responding to our environment. I often explain to clients that it is like a silent microphone or camera that is always observing what is happening both outside of us and within us.

If we are consistently experiencing stress, anxiety, fear, or emotional pressure, the nervous system can remain in a heightened state of alert.


When that happens, the stress doesn't just stay in our thoughts. It begins to translate into the body.


The nervous system communicates with the muscular system, the fascia system, and the neurological system. When stress is present in one area of our being, it naturally spreads into others. This is often where chronic tension patterns begin.


Another important thing to understand is that our nervous system is always scanning both our internal and external environments. In a natural, sober state, the body is constantly observing what is happening around us and responding accordingly.


When we begin adding in external stimuli like alcohol, caffeine, television, social media, or other forms of stimulation, these things can also influence the nervous system.


There have been times when I’ve noticed that while watching a certain show or video, my body begins to shift into a fight-or-flight response. Even though I may be sitting comfortably on the couch with a blanket and technically relaxing, my nervous system is still responding to what it is perceiving.


Our nervous system can still respond emotionally and physiologically to what we are watching, even if we know it isn't happening to us.


When this constant stimulation is combined with stress, caffeine, alcohol, or emotional pressure, it can amplify what is already happening within the body. Over time, this can contribute to increased tension within the muscles and nervous system.


How Craniosacral Therapy Helps Release Neck and Shoulder Pain


My approach to craniosacral therapy is very intuitive. I often explain it using the analogy of a river flowing through the body.


Imagine that your body has a current of water running through it from the very top of your head all the way down to your feet. Ideally, that current is flowing freely with a strong and healthy pulse.


But when stress, tension, or emotional pressure build up, certain areas of the body can become “dammed off.” When that flow is restricted, pain, tension, and imbalance can begin to develop.


During a craniosacral therapy session, I am listening to the rhythms of the body and helping restore that natural flow.


When trigger point therapy is added, I incorporate focused muscular work to release tight areas within the face, neck, shoulders, and chest. I locate areas of tension and gently hold those trigger points while the body begins to soften and unwind.


Another important part of the session is nervous system regulation. As I work, my nervous system is constantly communicating with the nervous system of the client on the table.

Our bodies are always scanning their environment to determine whether it is safe.

When the body begins to feel safe, it naturally starts to release what it has been holding.

Most of the time, what the body truly wants is simply to be seen, heard, and supported. When that space of safety is created, the body begins to unwind and move back toward balance.


Our bodies already know how to heal. They know how to return to harmony. Sometimes we simply need to create the space that allows that process to happen.


What Clients Often Notice After a Few Sessions


As tension begins to release and the nervous system settles, many clients start to experience noticeable changes.


People often report feeling lighter, both physically and emotionally. Pain and tightness begin to decrease, mobility improves, and many clients feel more connected to their bodies again.


Clients may also notice improvements in sleep, energy levels, mood, and overall mental clarity.


What Your Body Might Be Trying to Tell You


If you are experiencing chronic neck, shoulder, or jaw tension, your body may be trying to communicate something important.


Our bodies are always signaling when something needs attention or balance. Tension, tightness, and discomfort are often the body’s way of asking for connection, safety, and support.


When we begin listening to those signals and create space for the body to release what it has been holding, healing can begin.


Finding Relief Through Consistency


For clients experiencing chronic neck, shoulder, or jaw tension, I often recommend sessions every two weeks at the beginning. Consistency allows the body and nervous system time to unwind long-held patterns and begin establishing a new baseline of balance.


Over time, many people find that not only does their physical pain improve, but their mental and emotional well-being improves as well.


Because ultimately, everything in the body is connected.
